In a globally expanding production environment, companies tend to improve their operations and reduce costs by using supply chain management techniques. Automotive production is a leader among other sectors of the national economy in terms of constant product innovation, use of advanced technologies and high quality standards. Effective management, particularly aiming for minimal stock and just-in time manufacturing, can significantly reduce the cost. Despite the fact that automotive sector is originated in Europe, mainly by contribution of Germany and France, it expanded further to United States. However, it was Japan that leveraged newly introduced technologies and practices to stand out in automotive industry. By late 20th century, the whole world was trying to copy the Japanese’s system, and during those years with the rapidly growing investment into East Asian countries, the center of automotive industry shifted from the west to the east. In today’ world, approximately half of the world’s automotive industry is conducted in Asia, with China contributing to 25% of world manufacturing. The purpose of this thesis is to explore and identify the key points and significance of supply chain management in automotive industry. My research reflects the Supply Chain Management practices and applications of Daimler and Volkswagen, which are the two leading companies in the Automotive sector in Germany, leading to many innovations in the world. Apart from that, the establishment process of automotive sector in the end of 19th century, the global circumstances in nowadays, strategies, cost policy and experience of leading automotive suppliers have been investigated from multiple domestic and foreign sources. | |
