Description
Abstract:Despite not belonging to the mainstream Western culture, manga and anime, Japanese comics and animation respectively, are taking the world by storm as Japanese popular cultural products. This industry’s global popularity among young people often motivated past literature to examine its social, cultural, or psychological impact, but not much the practical business dimension. As a result, this paper aims to introduce the manga and anime industry by answering the question of  “How does the Japanese manga and anime industry complex work?” for parties that would like to get into or take note from it. A new framework called “Industry Character Model,” built upon PESTLE Analysis by Francis J. Aguilar, is employed to investigate the manga and anime industry in a succinct and comprehensive manner. The framework investigates three sub-topics: history, structures, and economic profile. Information is then gathered and analyzed from literature review, primary data (interviews, websites, etc.), and secondary sources (books, journal articles, etc.). Although manga and anime are usually perceived as parts of a bigger industry, this paper studies manga and anime as two separate sectors before accessing their combined influence. The research found that much of manga’s and anime’s past, current structures, and practices are parallel to one another. Specifically, the long history of development allows the two fields to finesse their business strategies, notably the meritocracy system in manga and diversifying investment in anime. Manga becomes the input for anime to reduce financial risks while the latter amplifies the overall profit of the two by acting as advertising, completing a synergetic production cycle.  Keywords: Manga, Japanese Comics, Japanese Anime/Animation, Manga and Anime Economics, Manga Industry Structure, Anime Industry Structure, Anime Marketing, Synergy.
