Abstract:Abstract       Tourism has become one of the most important economic industries in the world in the last few decades. However, it is not only a highly profitable business, but it is one of the most polluting industries what is the least sustainable in terms of economy, society and environment. In case of tourism, pollution does not only take place during visiting long-distance destinations, but also during moving within destinations and during the service production to the tourists who are already there, and this is just the tip of the iceberg. The present paper is dealing with the options we have nowadays to preserve tourism, however, transform it to a sustainable form of spending leisure time.  The aim of this paper is to disclose the definition of mass tourism, overtourism and sustainable tourism, analyzing their components, nature and their relation to each other. Furthermore, the objectives of this research are to determine the tools and solutions that destinations are currently using for reaching sustainability in the tourism industry by reviewing examples of best practices, and to study further domestic tourism as a possible solution, especially in the case of Hungary. In this respect, this paper seeks to address the following questions: Is domestic tourism a possible solution to address problems raised by unsustainable tourism? Considering the preferences and travelling customs of Hungarian tourists, can domestic tourism beat international tourism? How popular is domestic tourism in Hungary? How is it promoted? and how successfully is it promoted?
