Kivonat: | The aim of the thesis is to find answers to the following questions: How does work-family balance appear in a pilot’s life? What are the challenges pilots have to face regarding work-family balance? What are the solutions for these challenges? To accomplish this aim, in the first part of the thesis I introduce work-life balance theories in a chronological order. As WLB consists of three separate terms (work, life and balance), they are evaluated individually and together as well. I define and describe all three terms, while discussing various theories of their correlations. Next I give a general description of the airline industry. I start with a history overview, then comes the presentation of the pilot’s life in general (their working schedules, training and other duties), and finally I dedicate one chapter to the work-life conflit that every pilot faces. Following the primary- is the secondary research, describing the findings of the interviews conducted with seven commercial pilots. I detail the answers concerning my research questions, the correlations found, similarities and differences in some cases. As a result, I draw the conclusion that work-life balance for pilots is a very subjective matter, since they have to adapt to such different circumstances than most other job holders. However, I have also examined similarities in how the pilots interviewed achieved their own balance. These similarities were mainly a supportive family, a true passion for their work, and last but not least a fair income. This last aspect was the most surprising one, as my primary research didn't lead me to assign such importance to it. |
