Abstract: | In this thesis, I try to give an evaluation of Chinese foreign policy initiatives in Kazakhstan in the context of the One Belt One Road (OBOR) program. I analyze the Chinese- Kazakh bilateral relationship before the OBOR initiative and give context on how the relationship between both states deepened after the start of the program. I describe the OBOR initiative as a soft power tool by China to strengthen its influence in Kazakhstan. My thesis tries to identify if the soft power tool was efficient in Kazakhstan, and how much China increased its influence in Kazakhstan, how internal politics have changed in the country. My research results showed that Kazakh-Chinese bilateral relationship has deepened in terms of economic cooperation, however, Chinese influence did not increase in Kazakhstan but decreased China’s positive image in the state. Moreover, program initiatives decreased the nation’s trust in the government and worsened the relationship between the citizens and the Kazakh government. It shows how the Kazakhstani government needs to have a dialogue with the nation instead of suppressing them in order successfully implement mutually beneficial international projects. |
