520 3 |a At its colonial peak, Portugal was one of the world's richest countries, however, thisposition didn’t last as it slowly declined to be among the poorest countries in western Europe inthe 20th century due to its inability to use it's wealth for the development of industrialinfrastructure.Portugal's African colonies were dismantled in the mid-1970s, a decade after similarimperial formations from other European metropoles were dismantled. Due to the unwillingnessof the Portuguese to dissolve their colonies- a refusal that can be explained by way of severalfactors- long and drawn-out conflict arose in Angola, Mozambique and Guinea from the earlysixties to mid-seventies. The fall of the Empire saw the loss of not only part of its strategic viewsthat were focused on the Atlantic but also a good portion of where their wealth came from, however Portugal has still been able to maintain durable relationships with their former colonies, albeit with occasional mishaps.I chose this topic partly due to curiosity brought on by personal familial matters butmainly due to the somewhat bumpy relationship between the two nations as the one I chose tospeak about is my home country. In my paper, I would like to analyze the colonial andpostcolonial relationship between Portugal and Angola (in particular) and how it affects bothcountries in modern times and how exactly did they benefit from each other or if they still do.The methodology of research for this paper would consist mainly of literature as there is muchavailable.
