Kivonat:This research’s aim is to compare the most relevant investment opportunities in Hungary in 2022 to the opportunities in the 2008-2009 recession. The goal is to examine how those investment types performed during the latest economic recession in 2008, to draw conclusions we could apply in the current economic situation and to learn from the past behaviour of the general public. To understand the differences between these two economic downturns, the paper examined the ongoing economic situation globally and in Hungary, during the two recessions. First, the examination of investment types, investment companies, and investment options like trust, had been conducted. These topics had been investigated in terms of the recessions. Then, the paper focused on what is a recession, how can the economy determine if it is in a recession period, how a recession starts, and what are the causes of a recession. The difference between a recession and a depression had also been stated.Going forward, the paper focuses on the Great Recession, how the different segments of the global economy reacted, how the different regions were hit by the financial crisis. The development of the World trade and the effects of the different markets are mentioned as well. The geographical focus was on Hungary. Interesting facts can be observed on how small countries’ economy follows the crash that has started in the United States. The paper examined the economy and how the households reacted to the recession, from the investing and saving perspective. The research turned towards the latest economic events, globally and regionally as well. Starting with the COVID-19 pandemic situation, and its aftermath, the economic recession, followed by the recovery and expansion after the recession, and last but not least the Russian-Ukrainian war and what the global and Hungarian economy must go through because of it. The paper examines the consequences of the war with a special focus on Hungary. With the research, the paper would like to find correlation between the investments in Hungary performed during 2008-2009 and are performing now in this uncertain economic situation.
