Abstract: | The West African sub-region is home to diverse countries, each of which has its unique economic opportunities and challenges. The heterogeneity of these West African countries often influences these opportunities and challenges. Issues such as cultural background, religion, political dynamics, etc. often shape the economic landscape of various countries within the West African sub-region. Despite all the unavoidable differences caused by this heterogeneity, Africa as a whole and especially the West-Africa sub-region has been able to see the importance of the need to foster strong economic diplomacy between and among the sub-regions and the entire region as a whole. Thus, Africa has made commendable attempts at fostering proper economic diplomacy within this region. In recent years, there has been an increasing recognition of the need to have sustainable regional integration in West Africa which would help to promote economic stability as well as poverty reduction. This was part of why the main sub-regional organization, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), was set up. The ECOWAS was set up on the 28th of May, 1975 in Lagos Nigeria. The institution is comprised of 15 member states which are; Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo This institution became the primary institution driving the regional efforts in the sub-region. |
