This thesis delves into the strategic importance of the Lithium Triangle (Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile), a region that collectively holds the majority of the world’s lithium resources. This thesis examines the economic potential of lithium within these countries, exploring how they can leverage their resources to foster sustainable development and maximize economic benefits, balancing the imperatives of environmental stewardship and local development. Through a comparative analysis of governance structures, policy frameworks, and market dynamics, the research highlights how each country’s approach to resource management shapes its economic trajectory. Key economic challenges, including market volatility, global competition, and fluctuating demand, are assessed alongside the potential for value chain integration, such as refining, battery production, and export diversification. The study also emphasizes the role of foreign investment and state-owned enterprises in the lithium sector, contrasting Argentina’s investor-friendly policies, Bolivia’s state-controlled model, and Chile’s evolving regulatory environment. While addressing the socio-environmental considerations intrinsic to lithium extraction, the thesis centers on actionable strategies to optimize economic returns. It underscores the importance of policy reforms for better productivity, infrastructure development, and strategic investments to stabilize revenue streams, attract foreign capital, and promote domestic value addition. By navigating these economic opportunities and challenges, the Lithium Triangle countries stand to transform their lithium wealth into a cornerstone of sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
