520 3 |a The semiconductor industry has emerged as a cornerstone of the modern global economy, enabling advances in technology, national security, and economic competitiveness. Among the key players, Taiwan holds a critical and dominant position, primarily through the technological leadership of companies such as TSMC. However, intensifying geopolitical tensions, aggressive government initiatives to reshore chip manufacturing, and internal challenges pose significant questions about Taiwan's ability to maintain this leadership through 2030. This thesis investigates whether Taiwan can preserve its dominant role in the semiconductor industry amid shifting global dynamics. It begins by examining the historical foundations of Taiwan’s semiconductor sector, tracing its development through strategic government policies, industrial innovation, and global integration. The study then analyzes the current state of the global semiconductor market, focusing on the impact of government incentive programs in the United States, China, the European Union, and South Korea. It evaluates how these initiatives, alongside new regulatory environments and export control regimes, are reshaping the competitive landscape. Special emphasis is placed on Taiwan’s domestic challenges, including resource constraints, talent shortages, demographic trends, and exposure to geopolitical risk. An expert interview with a practitioner in the Taiwanese semiconductor sector further enriches the analysis by offering direct industry insights into Taiwan’s vulnerabilities and strategic responses. The findings indicate that while Taiwan faces significant external and internal threats, it retains substantial advantages in advanced manufacturing technologies, supply chain integration, and innovation capacity. With careful management of risks and continued strategic adaptation, Taiwan is positioned to maintain its leadership in the global semiconductor industry through 2030.
