The aim of the research is to understand and examine the sustainability challenges and strategies used within the oil industry, evaluate how major oil companies, especially BP and ExxonMobil, deal with these challenges and responsibilities, and then look into the public‘s perception of this topic. By merging the theoretical perspectives and real sustainable strategies of oil majors and the survey on the people’s opinion, this study offers a comprehensive view on sustainability, how it is currently viewed and deemed in the oil industry. The combination of the analysis of the companies and the survey allows us to look at the sustainability, both from the perspective of the businesses and also from the public. To understand the companies’ stand on the topic, I looked at corporate company reports and their commitment to sustainable operations. While both companies have set net-zero ambitions and implemented sustainability initiatives, the study finds considerable differences in transparency, ambition, and public engagement. On the other hand, over 100 participants filled out a survey on the topic and the result revealed widespread public concern about the oil industry’s environmental impact and future outlook. The thesis concludes that while key players in the oil industry have made strategic commitments towards sustainability, these efforts often are not seen differently by the public and do not reach their expectations as they lack short-term accountability. In order to overcome and maintain this setback in their image, oil companies need to fill this gap and implement a stronger framework, improve stakeholder engagement, and deliver measurable processes across their operations.
