Description
Abstract:This thesis explores how South Korea utilizes the Korean Wave (Hallyu) as a means of cultural diplomacy to promote its global image and foster international relationships. My thesis investigates the rise and global spreading of K-culture, which mainly including K-pop and K-dramas. This phenomenom started its development from the 1990s, rising to a global cultural force in the 2020s. By combining qualitative content analysis with interviews conducted at the Korean Cultural Center in Budapest, the research examines South Korean governmental strategies, technological advancements, corporations’ contributions, and the cultural appeal that have supported Hallyu's global success. Furthermore, it assesses the economic, diplomatic, and socio-cultural impacts of the Korean Wave on South Korea’s international stance. Lastly, the thesis identifies both opportunities and challenges in leveraging cultural assets for diplomatic purposes, offering a model for how nations can leverage soft power in an increasingly interconnected world.
