| 520 | 3 | |a One of the most significant and recent developments in the Hungarian banking sector includes the formation of the entirely Hungarian-owned MBH Bank Nyrt., resulting from the merger of Budapest Bank Zrt., MKB Bank Nyrt., and Takarékbank Zrt. Each of these three medium-sized financial institutions operate distinctively, creating a complex challenge of finetuning the distinct features of these banks, such as history, culture, asset and organizational structure, as well as policies and accounting practices, making it one of a kind and unprecedented in the history of the banking sector in Hungary.The aim of this study is to investigate the phenomenon of concentration and competition in the banking sector of Hungary and the potential consolidation efforts aimed at reducing the number of operational banks. It seeks to explore the implications and impact of banking consolidations for the Hungarian financial landscape, with a central focus on the formation of MBH Bank Group as a case study, the advantages and disadvantages of the merger, positioning relative to major players, and future outlook. The central hypothesis of this study posits that strategic consolidations within the Hungarian banking sector, exemplified by the formation of MBH Bank Nyrt., could lead to concentration and potential increase in competition, while investigating the role of MBH Bank, in the current market structure. | |
