As journalism undergoes sweeping changes driven by digital innovation, audience interactivity, and political-economic shifts, sports journalism exemplifies this transformation more vividly than most sectors. Once rooted in traditional print formats, it is now dominated by real-time updates, multimedia storytelling, and participatory content creation. Drawing on theoretical frameworks from digital media studies and empirical data from Hungary, this research investigates whether print-based sports media can sustain its role amid digital disruption and political pressures. Through three case studies—an analysis of Nemzeti Sport's hybrid strategy, comparative media coverage of a politically charged football protest, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on sports reporting—the study examines both the symbolic and practical functions of print media in a highly politicised environment. The findings suggest that while print sports journalism retains certain advantages such as credibility and narrative depth, these are increasingly insufficient without digital integration, editorial independence, and adaptive business models. Ultimately, the thesis argues that in contexts like Hungary, the traditional survival strategies of print media are becoming unsustainable. | |
