520 3 |a In our age, microchips, which are also called integrated circuits or semiconductors, play a defining part in our lives, even if we don't necessarily take them into account. They can be found in all our electronic devices, from mobile phones to other household electronics, and even in cars. They have become indispensable in various industries such as telecommunications, automotive, and consumer electronics. The microchip industry exists on a global supply chain. The great powers China and the USA have become significant players in the production and trade of microchips. Next to them, the dominant players in the semiconductor industry are the little tigers of Asia, especially Taiwan and South Korea. The relationship between the main actors includes cooperation, competition, and sometimes conflict. In this paper, I would like to outline the complex world of microchip production and trade, and most importantly, highlight dynamics that try to keep the balance of power in our world straight. Since this is a current topic that changes day by day with innovations, new regulations, and political moves, it is difficult to see through. The China-US trade dispute is a multifaceted issue that reflects the complex nature of international trade, technology, and geopolitics. My research questions would be: How does the US-China trade war over semiconductors impact the global supply chain, particularly the roles of South Korea and Taiwan? What are the economic and geopolitical consequences of South Korea and Taiwan being between the US export controls and Chinese demand for semiconductors? Is Taiwan’s and South Korea’s semiconductor dominance sustainable in the face of growing US-China tensions and China’s technological ambitions? Can the US successfully contain China’s semiconductor industry through trade restrictions, and what role do Samsung and TSMC play in this strategy?
