Description
Abstract:This Thesis paper examines how TikTok's recommendation algorithm affects the revival of nostalgic music, focusing on Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" and Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams." By using a design with mixed-methods online survey of 120 TikTok users and thematic analysis of 100 hashtag videos, the paper discloses that algorithmic curation and participating remix culture co-produce emotional, viral nostalgia. Survey data shows that 74% of users searched traces of streaming platforms for exposure, while content analysis highlights themes of emotional resonance, trend participation and cross-generation connection. Temporal mapping links TikTok peaks to dramatic Spotify and chart resurgences, and confirms the power of the platform as both the trend motor and a digital archive. The study offers strategic recommendations for industry, platforms, creators and researchers, and requires greater algorithmic transparency and interdisciplinary study on digital cultural heritage.
