It explores how media industries and digital platforms reshape the genre’s meanings, visibility, and social role by applying capitalist logic to cultural production. Focusing on subgenres such as Funk Carioca, Proibidão, Consciente, Ostentação, and Pop/Mainstream Funk, the study analyzes how media gatekeeping, algorithmic filtering, and representational practices impact which voices and messages are amplified or silenced. Brazilian Funk, once a vehicle of resistance and identity formation in marginalized communities, becomes increasingly depoliticized or criminalized when filtered through dominant media narratives. Drawing on critical theory and cultural studies, this research reveals how media systems influence public perception, cultural legitimacy, and the boundaries of acceptable expression in Brazil’s mediated landscape. | |
