520 3 |a Ecotourism as a concept and practice has emerged over the last thirty years as one of the fastest growing markets in tourism sector based on natural environment. Ecotourism, as an alternative to mass tourism, consists of visiting natural areas by attending environmentally friendly activities which are not only based on nature experience but also contributes to economic and social development of communities. Despite ecotourism is a tendency developed against the negative effects of uncontrolled developing mass tourism on environment and society, the impacts of ecotourism are also a matter of debate nowadays. Since ecotourism involves the natural environment as main attraction, it also involves both negative and positive impacts of visitations and visitors on the natural environment. Hungary is a rich country in terms of ecotourism resources with around 400 recorded bird species, around 200 butterflies, over 3,400 types of moth, and thousands of plant species. There are around 300 protected areas at national level and more than a thousand at local level in Hungary, including ten National Parks as well. With the wide range of natural attractions, ecotourism products and destinations, Hungary has a great potential in ecotourism and Lake Tisza is one of the ecologically most significant areas as part of Hortobagy National Park, and a World Heritage site, which is one of the strongest candidates at representing Hungary in ecotourism. Rapid growth in tourism activities in the Lake Tisza has aroused our interest in analyzing the environmental impacts of developing ecotourism in the region with the help of a survey conducted between the visitors. This study was conducted by doing an online questionnaire based on the perceptions and experience of respondents who had visited the Lake Tisza before with the purpose of developing a better understanding on ecotourism and its environmental impacts in the region. 17 questions were asked to respondents and 205 respondents took part in the study from different groups of age and occupations. It is humbly hoped to provide valuable information to stakeholders of the region and make some recommendations which may be used in the benefit of local economy and natural ecology.
