Kivonat:The paper aims to give an insight in and an overview of the bilateral economic relations of Hungary and the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations (4th April 1964) both countries have undergone fundamental economic and political transformations. In the period of socialism, Hungary acquired a good reputation with the implementation of various development projects: it built river-dams and carried out agricultural projects, mostly in the northern part of Nigeria. By the time of Hungary’s systemic change, government-financed development projects vanished and bilateral economic relations shrunk. However, a few joint ventures survived even the most difficult period. After a thorough analysis of the Nigerian economy and the presentation of some important objectives of its economic policy, the author comes to the conclusion that the Hungarian government’s recent “strategy of Southern Opening” gives encouragement for the upgrading of the relations with the sub-Saharan region in general and with Nigeria, the most populous African country with huge petroleum reserves, in particular.
