As cities increasingly integrate subcultures into their marketing frameworks, understanding the interplay between underground music culture and tourism is essential. The research highlights a shift in consumer preferences, particularly among young adults, towards authentic and immersive experiences that go beyond conventional tourist activities. Through a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative interviews, quantitative surveys, and field observations in Berlin, this study reveals the motivations, behaviours, and spending habits of techno tourists who typically engage with the nightlife and broader cultural offerings over a 3 to 4-day visit. Key findings indicate that the underground EDM scene not only enhances Berlin’s identity and appeal as a tourist destination but also contributes significantly to the economy. However, challenges such as gentrification, authenticity preservation, and sustainability pose risks to the uniqueness of the scene. This thesis calls for comprehensive research into the dynamics between music and tourism to explore opportunities and address concerns, expressing the need for strategies that balance tourism growth with the preservation of local identity and subcultures.
