The primary case study is Sberbank, one of Russia's largest banks. The main objective is to evaluate whether ecosystem-based M&A, using Sberbank as a case study, has proven successful strategy for modern banks.The study draws on established economic theories of mergers and acquisitions: Coase's transaction cost theory and Williamson's control theory. We also examine the key stages, types, and motivations of mergers and acquisitions in the banking sector.In research methodology, the study combines a qualitative analysis of merger and acquisition trends with a quantitative assessment of Sberbank's financial performance based on IFRS data for 2018–2024.Overall, the research confirms that ecosystem-driven M&A is an effective strategy for modern banks. Sberbank's transition from a traditional bank to a multi-service institution demonstrates how technology acquisition and the creation of integrated platforms can drive growth, increase revenue and strengthen their competitive position in the market. | |
