Description
Abstract:As sustainability emerges as a defining challenge in modern manufacturing, one industry that often escapes attention is the mattress sector. Each year, millions of mattresses end up in landfills, even though most of their materials can be recycled or repurposed. This research seeks to shed light on how sustainability in the mattress industry can progress from a niche initiative to an integrated, everyday practice that reshapes both consumer behaviour and manufacturing standards. By focusing on this often-overlooked sector, the project aims to explore how awareness, accessibility, and innovation can align to make sustainable choices the norm rather than the exception. To achieve this, a comprehensive questionnaire survey examines consumer understanding, perceptions, and purchasing behaviours related to sustainable mattresses, while in-depth interviews with industry professionals investigate the economic realities and logistical challenges of implementing circular production models at scale. Together, these approaches bridge behavioural insights with industrial perspectives to identify realistic pathways for sustainable production and responsible end-of-life management. Ultimately, this study envisions a future where the mattress industry is not only comfortable, but also circular, environmentally responsible, and firmly aligned with the principles of sustainability.
