The study focuses on the Republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. In the framework of the research work, the following questions were raised: how should the Central Asian countries consider the potential opportunities, benefits, and risks associated with the BRI? Are the Central Asian states’ development strategies compatible with the Chinese Initiative? How do the Central Asian countries exploit the Russian-Chinese competition? The hypothesis that the BRI engagement would contribute considerably to political stability and security in the region of Central Asia was formulated and partly proven. The study incorporates the literature based research methodology and the comparative analyses of the reviewed countries based on the latest data obtained from sources published in English and Russian which is one of the official languages in some of these republics. The research uses the classical geopolitical theories such as Mackinder’s Heartland and Spykman’s Rimland theories as well as the concept of the New Great Game to explain the foreign policy relations towards the Central Asian countries. The detailed political, economic and investment analyses of the Central Asian states in comparison to China are conducted. The paper describes the formation and convergence of the state strategies with the Chinese initiative and a particular role of the Central Asian national authorities. The objective views on the consequences of implementing the BRI are given in the research, as the challenges and risks are considered from the perspective of each participant.
