Abstract: | This research paper aims to explore the effects of subscription-based music streaming services on the music industry. It examines the music industry in the past two decades and the changes that reshaped the industry. It takes a closer look at three of the most prominent music streaming services: Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal. Moreover, it questions the role of record labels in the modern music industry and whether the current business model is good or bad for musicians. The research shows that the changes that reshaped the music industry in the past two decades have caused an unfair share of revenue between the artists and record labels. It also concludes that record labels would maintain their position on the top of the music industry power structure, but they would struggle to attract new artists due to competition. |
