| Kivonat: | Tourism in Cambodia is like a newborn. The locals are trying to grasp what it's all about, especially since it brings in foreigners who are familiar with this concept. These outsiders are reshaping the tourism landscape in ways that might be unfamiliar to the locals. In Cambodia there were generations who were born in a country where they were not allowed to read, study, or educate themselves. The country was then ruled by the Khmer Rouge regime, which set the country back to the 1700s. Tourism had to be reborn, and the cultural heritage sites, which were almost diminished by the regime, were in a very fragile situation.In my thesis, I will research how tourism has developed over the years and how it can handle mass tourism, an increasingly frequent and even typically occurring phenomenon these days. As tourist numbers grow in the country, it reforms the country’s economy and culture as well. Cultural heritage can be easily damaged by the destructive effects of mass tourism. Hence, the natural question arises: What represents the optimal approach for safeguarding and preserving cultural heritage, mainly when it serves as the primary tourist draw and a vital source of livelihood for local communities? |
