Description
Abstract:Each year around 340 million metric tons of meat are manufactured, putting significant strain on the ecosystem. This is evidenced by the release of greenhouse gases, depletion of agricultural land, and consumption of freshwater resources. This research aims to evaluate the level of sustainability and environmental friendliness of a Hungarian pork processing company called Kometa '99 Zrt. from environmental, social, and economic aspects. It also involved assessing the company's sustainability practices and employees' perceptions of its initiatives. Methodologically, the research employed in-depth interviews, employee surveys, and gate-to-gate Life Cycle Assessment. Data was analysed by using a coding system and creating a Sustainability Scorecard. Findings reveal that Kometa '99 Zrt. has made significant progress in sustainability and has plans for further sustainability initiatives in the future, achieving an overall performance score of 89 out of 100. The company has implemented various measures, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy usage, adopting sustainable sourcing practices, and by investing in waste management, the company aims to achieve zero production waste and plans to install solar panels soon. The company published Scope 1 and Scope 2 data and it demonstrates compliance with several sustainability standards, although areas for improvement include enhancing marketing communication and board diversity and raising awareness among employees and customers. Despite these challenges, Kometa '99 Zrt. shows transparency and a clear long-term vision through ongoing developments and investments in sustainability initiatives like the Integrated Management system, Honestfood, and Kometa Innovation Pipeline.
